The album closer for Nirvana's 1992 alternative rock masterpiece Nevermind, "Something in the Way" found singer-songwriter Kurt Cobain at his most earnest, telling a poignant tale of self-abandonment partially inspired by his days of homelessness in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. Sonically, the song marked a major departure for the band, who traded its trademark loud-quiet-loud dynamics for a plaintive acoustic sound that contrasted with the distorted textures found throughout the album. And even though it was never released as a single, "Something in the Way" experienced a surge in popularity in 2020 after being included in the first trailer for Matt Reeves' superhero film, The Batman. Following the theatrical release of The Batman in March 2022, the track's streaming numbers skyrocketed as it peaked at Number 2 on Billboard's Rock Streaming Song chart and Number 4 on the Alternative Digital Song Sales chart. The band's final live performance of the song can be heard on Nirvana's MTV Unplugged, recorded in 1993.
