"Serve the Servants" contains all the ingredients of a typical grunge stew: witches, "teenage angst", and plenty of dissonance. The candid and caustic opener to Nirvana's seminal and final 1993 album In Utero—which went to number one in the US and UK—reads like a letter to Kurt Cobain's father ("I just want you to know that I / Don't hate you anymore") and works like a therapy session for the late Nirvana frontman who confronts personal issues and considers his artistry and newfound success. Although it's not clear if he's taking aim at the media or the music industry, the chorus repeats the phrase "serve the servants", with Kurt Cobain spitting out the words. Alternatively, this line could be a reference to the parent-child relationship in light of Kurt Cobain's rocky relationship with his father. But, most importantly, the gnarly guitar solo here is without a doubt the best one on In Utero.
