“Love on the Rocks” is one of the four songs Neil Diamond wrote for the 1980 film The Jazz Singer. The film starred the popular singer-songwriter in his acting debut alongside Lucie Arnaz and Sir Laurence Olivier. This remake of the 1927 film tells the story of a young fifth-generation Jewish cantor who has dreams of becoming a pop singer. Diamond was already a very successful entertainer with hits including “Sweet Caroline,” ”Cracklin’ Rosie,” and “Song Sung Blue,” but he had hoped to branch out into films. There were many setbacks in the making of The Jazz Singer. First, the production company, MGM, dropped out. Then the star needed back surgery. There was even talk of replacing him with Barry Manilow. Diamond had trouble transitioning from singing to acting and the film opened to awful reviews. He received a Razzie for the worst performance in a feature film and the film is still in the top ten list of worst films of all time. But the soundtrack was a huge success, selling over 6-million copies. It also revitalized his career and introduced him to a whole new audience. This version of “Love on the Rocks” was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra at the legendary Abby Road Studios. The backing track for “Love on the Rocks” is available as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
