"Across the Universe" was originally recorded by The Beatles for the 1969 charity compilation No One's Gonna Change Our World. Written by John Lennon in early 1968 but finally credited to Lennon-McCartney, it was re-recorded for their twelfth and final studio album Let It Be (1970). Inspired by an argument between Lennon and his then-wife Cynthia, "Across the Universe" is a mystical ballad greatly influenced by the Fab Four's increasing interest in Transcendental Meditation during the late 1960s. Over the course of the next decades, several versions and outtakes were made available on different compilations by the Liverpool four-piece, and cover versions by artists like David Bowie, Fiona Apple, and Rufus Wainwright helped turn the song into an all-time classic. In 2021, alternative metal band Evanescence delivered a lush orchestral rendition of "Across the Universe" on their fifth full-length The Bitter Truth.
