Even though it is widely known as the song that broke Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia into the mainstream in 1997, "Torn" has had quite an interesting journey since its inception in the early 1990s. Written by Scott Cutler and Anne Preven from the American rock band Ednaswap with their producer Phil Thornalley (of The Cure fame), it was originally meant to be a solo song for Preven. It was first recorded by Danish singer Lis Sørensen, who turned it into a local hit in 1993. Two years later, Ednaswap offered their own take on "Torn," included in their 1995 self-titled studio debut. However, it was Natalie Imbruglia's version that finally helped the song get international recognition, topping the charts in several countries and becoming one of the most significant radio hits of the 1990s. Featured in her 1997 studio debut Left of the Middle, "Torn" reached Number 1 in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Spain, and Sweden, and turned Natalie Imbruglia into a superstar almost overnight. The song received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and was also included in her 2001 MTV Unplugged album.
