With Nikki Sixx taking inspiration from Arthur Janov's 1970 book The Primal Scream. Primal Therapy: A Cure For Neurosis, as well as his own childhood, Mötley Crüe engaged in their very own version of sonic psychotherapy with this hair-raising blast of hair metal from 1991. Shredding guitars and booming drums give way to Vince Neil's shrieking vocals and within the space of a minute, the US heavy metallers hook the listener into their lurid and no-holds-barred world of screaming and shouting. "Primal Scream" was released as a single, but only made it to number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100, although it did reach number 21 on the Mainstream Rock Chart. The song was contained on the band's 1991 album Decade of Decadence 81-91, which was the first of multiple greatest hits compilations released by Mötley Crüe, and was one of three newly recorded songs for the album, the other two being "Angela" and "Anarchy in the U.K.".
