British glam rock band Sweet released their song “Action” in 1975. Some years later, a new generation discovered the song when British metal band Def Leppard released their own version of the track in 1993. The group first recorded the song in 1992 but decided to produce a new version after adding guitarist Vivian Campbell to their lineup. Largely a self-produced affair, Def Leppard's version of “Action” was included as part of the group’s compilation album Retro Active (1993), which brought together outtakes and previously unreleased songs. Originally written by Andy Scott, Brian Connolly, Steve Priest, and Mick Tucker, "Action" is a defiant and angry track about the way pop stars are often dismissed and diminished by the press. Unlike the original, Def Leppard's take on the song injects more energy and louder guitars to really drive the point home. Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott remarked that Sweet guitarist Andy Scott called it “the best cover of a Sweet song he'd ever heard.”
