Miranda Lambert wrote "They've Closed Down the Honky Tonks" at the beginning of the Covid pandemic. The song expresses the sadness she felt as a result of venues and touring shutting down. The track is recorded as a stripped-down guitar/vocal that sounds like she could have been singing from one of the many Texas bars she mentions in the song. Lambert recorded several songs with fellow Texas artists, Jon Randall and Jack Ingram, for The Marfa Tapes. "They've Closed Down the Honky Tonks" appears in the Marfa Tapes film which documents the three artists' five-day retreat to the West Texas town of Marfa. Ingram told Rolling Stone that instead of waiting to get a full band together and booking studio time, they wanted to share the songs closer to the time they were originally inspired.
The backing track for "They've Closed Down the Honky Tonks" is available as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
