The song tells the story of a circus performer’s tragic love affair with a trapeze artist named Harlan Giovanni, and sees the protagonist look back wistfully at the best years that are behind her. “Every show must end, every circus leaves town / You don’t know the magic’s gone / Until the lights go down,” she sings. In this song, Miranda Lambert ties together the album's cast of characters using the threads of their shared ambition as well hinting at her own motivations. "I only miss my Harlan when I hear a carousel / I only miss my Harlan when I hear the carousel," adds the protagonist, ending the song, and the album, on a haunting note.
