Bluesy country-rocker "Me and Bobby McGee" was first popularised by Janis Joplin, who posthumously went to number one on the US singles chart in 1971 with the track following her tragic death from a heroin overdose on 4 October 1970. The song was written by Kris Kristofferson with a writing credit from Monument Records founder Fred Foster—who also cooked up the title—and paints the portrait of two wayward travellers, the narrator and Bobby McGee. The track has been covered by everyone from Gordon Lightfoot—who topped the Canadian country charts with his version in 1970—to Jerry Lee Lewis. In 2021, County Galway-born Irish folk artist Michael Fallon, known professionally as Mike Denver, put his own stamp on the timeless classic for his album So Far So Good, which collected a number of his best-loved singles, including "Galway City On a Saturday Night," "Goodbye My Old Friend," "My Dear Old Galway Bay," and "Hey God Are You Listening."
