In the spring of 2014, American country artists Mark Wystrach, Jess Carson, and Cameron Duddy spent 11 days at the Sonic Ranch, a legendary studio right outside of El Paso, Texas. This formative experience was documented on the 2021 documentary The Sonic Ranch and proved to be the perfect snapshot of a band coming together. It also offered a glimpse into Midland's creative process during their early days. The Sonic Ranch's soundtrack was released as a full-length album that year and consisted mainly of demo versions and previously unreleased material. Such is the case of "Runnin' Wild," a contemplative country ballad written by guitarist Jess Carson featuring sparse instrumentation and Mark Wystrach's amazing vocal performance. As is customary in country music, the lyrics reference the thrill of driving out on the open road in an aimless fashion, not knowing what the final destination might be.
