Country music often treads a delicate line of dealing with serious issues, such as heartbreak and alcohol abuse, while also keeping things swinging and fun. Drinkin’ Problem by American country music group Midland is a great example of this. The song was the band’s very first single, released to promote their debut album On the Rocks. The trio keeps things fresh while exploring a time-honored tradition in the genre, as the song’s protagonist drowns his sorrows in cheap whiskey. Drinkin’ Problem was written by Midland along with Josh Osborne and Shane McAnally. It was produced by Osborne, McAnally, and Dann Huff. It gained critical acclaim and launched the group into stardom. The song peaked at Number 4 on Billboard’s US Hot Country Songs chart, as well as 45 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It went on to be certified double Platinum in 2019, selling over 450,000 copies in the United States.
