There are few things as iconic to country music as the tradition of pouring one’s heart out to a bartender over a glass of bourbon. And rather than avoiding the trope, young country singers of today have largely decided to lean into that same tradition. One great example is American singer Michael Ray, whose 2020 single “Whiskey and Rain” is about exactly that; the lyrics describe a protagonist drowning their sorrows in a glass of whiskey, attempting to wash away the pain over the song’s slide and tremolo guitar lines. Michael Ray has pointed out that it was recorded in an attempt to honor the country forebearers that paved the way for him, like Gary Allan and Dwight Yoakam. “Whiskey and Rain” was written by Jesse Frasure and Josh Thompson, and produced by Ross Copperman. It peaked at Number 18 on the Billboard US Country Airplay chart and reached Number 1 on Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.
