Who would have thought a pet rat could form the perfect subject for a pop classic? Written by Don Black (with music by Walter Scharf), Michael Jackson's 1972 song "Ben" was conceived for the soundtrack of the film of the same name, and was originally destined for the dulcet tones of Donny Osmond, but a 14-year-old Michael Jackson picked up the song instead, and scored the first of a long, long line of solo chart-toppers. Shooting to the top of both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the Australian ARIA charts, Michael Jackson even named his second album after the song on which he begins by addressing the pet in question; "Ben, the two of us need look no more / We both found what we were looking for / With a friend to call my own / I'll never be alone / And you my friend will see / You've got a friend in me / (You've got a friend in me)." Michael Jackson's second studio album Ben was released by Motown Records in August 1972.
