Rising up in the early '70s, "Breadfan" was a freshly baked, trailblazing take on what would come to be known as progressive metal. Originally cooked up by Welsh heavy metal troupe Budgie – who formed in Cardiff in the late '60s and welcomed a sprawling cast of misfits into their clan over subsequent decades – for their 1973 album Never Turn Your Back on a Friend, "Breadfan" is a survey of the dough you spend, not the dough you bake, and ponders the age-old question: can money buy you happiness? Metallica covered the song in September 1988 as a B-side to their singles "Harvester of Sorrow," and "Eye of the Beholder" and included their version of this lighting-quick headbanger on their 1998 album Garage Inc., which was brimming with various covers and B-sides, including an interpretation of “Die, Die My Darling” by The Misfits, “Sabbra Cadabra” by Black Sabbath and “Whiskey in the Jar” by the one and only Thin Lizzy.
