A few years after achieving mainstream fame through their self-titled fifth studio album in 1991, American thrash metal pioneers Metallica shed its skin once again and completely reinvented themselves on 1996's Load. Unlike their previous releases, Load steered away from the group's heavy metal origins and into hard rock territory, also incorporating influences from country, blues, and alternative rock. Metallica's new direction was made clear from the very beginning with the hard-hitting "Ain't My Bitch," which served as the album's opener. Written and produced by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich with additional input from Bob Ross, "Ain't My Bitch" features distinct Southern rock overtones and its lyrics depict a person unbothered by the problems of those around him. Despite alienating a large part of their fanbase, Load represented another major win for the band, debuting at Number 1 on the Billboard 200 and eventually obtaining quintuple-platinum certification in the United States.
