"The Way It Was in '51" is a song by Merle Haggard from the album of the same name. The album is largely comprised of Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell covers, but Haggard opens the album with one of his own songs. "The Way It Was in '51" is a nostalgic look back to the "good ol' days." He sings about "slow dancin' close together" before Rock and Roll, President Harry Truman, drive-in restaurants, and a time when "Hank and Lefty crowded every jukebox." The country legend would have been 14 in '51. When he was nine, his father died of a brain hemorrhage. His troubled life soon spun out of control. He served three years in San Quentin State Prison for burglary but was able to turn his life around. He became one of the most successful country artists of all time.
The backing track for "The Way It Was in '51" is available as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
