An art-pop character study penned by the talked-about New York City-born singer-songwriter, "Evil" is the twelfth track on Melanie Martinez's third album Portals, on which she ushered in the arrival of her new fantastical alter-ego; a pink deep sea-dwelling like creature who hatched from an egg. Portals shot to number two on the US Billboard 200 while the album's two singles, "Death" and "Void," went to number 95 and 61, respectively. Portals was the successor to Melanie Martinez's second album K–12 and prior to that, her 2015 debut Cry Baby, which was also released with a companion film of the same name.
