In 2016, American singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor followed her massive 2015 hit single “All About That Bass” with the album Thank You, a maturation of her trademark sound. The album was a commercial hit. In addition to the standard edition, Meghan Trainor released a Deluxe version of the album. The Deluxe version of Thank You included three additional songs, one of which is the track “Mom.” Co-written with Ross Golan, Johan Carlsson, and her brother Justin Trainor, the song is a loving tribute to Meghan Trainor’s mother Kelli Trainor, whom she credits for teaching her how to love herself. Kelli Trainor appears on the track in a recorded phone conversation between mother and daughter. Musically, “Mom” is modeled after the Motown sound, with girl-group backing vocals and a full horn section, culminating with a powerful saxophone solo. The song also appears in the 2016 Garry Marshall film Mother’s Day.
