Written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for Motown Records in 1966 and thrust into the spotlight by Marvin Gaye, whose single was released in October 1968 on Motown’s Tamla label and shot to the top of the Billboard Pop Singles chart for seven weeks. Two versions of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" existed prior to Marvin Gaye's hit; the song was originally recorded by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles in 1966, but was rejected by Motown owner Berry Gordy, while Norman Whitfield also produced a version with Gladys Knight & the Pips, which was released as a single in September 1967 and slotted in at Number 2 on the Billboard chart. Creedence Clearwater Revival released an 11-minute cover version of the song on their 1970 album Cosmo’s Factory. “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” is a soul classic which was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame for "historical, artistic and significant" value in 1998.
