Italian rock troupe Måneskin first assembled in Rome in 2016 and comprises Damiano David (vocalist), Victoria De Angelis (bassist) Thomas Raggi (guitarist), and Ethan Torchio (drummer). They were given their first shot at national fame when they performed on the Italian version of X Factor in 2017 before they broke through to a wider audience when they were crowned winners of the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with "Zitti e buoni." They went on to release three studio albums—2018 debut Il ballo della vita, 2021 follow-up Teatro d'ira: Vol. I and third studio album Rush!, on which "Timezone" is included. The toned-down yet explosive emotional rock track depicts a long-distance relationship and was written with US pop hitmaker and in-demand songwriter Justin Tranter (Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez), Swedish producer Rami Yacoub (Britney Spears, Ariana Grande) and Danish songwriter and producer Sylvester "Sly" Sivertsen (The Chainsmokers, Dua Lipa).
