Brightened by steel guitar, "If I Had a Boat" serves as the opening track to Pontiac. Allegedly based on a true story, the song recalls a time when Lyle Lovett tried to ride a pony across a pond ("If I had a boat, I'd go out on the ocean / And if I had a pony, I'd ride him on my boat / And we could all together go out on the ocean / Me upon my pony on my boat.") Elsewhere, Pontiac – which reached number 12 on Billboard's chart for Top Country Albums, and 117 on the Billboard Hot 200 – evokes murderers (“L.A. County”), love songs (“Give Back My Heart,” “She’s Hot to Go”) and jazz ("She's No Lady").
