The classic mambo and jazz dance instrumental "Mambo No. 5" was originally written by Cuban musician Dámaso Pérez Prado in 1949. Almost five decades later, the song gained new life after being sampled by German-born singer Lou Bega on his 1999 hit single of the same name. Included in his studio debut A Little Bit of Mambo, Lou Bega's remake of the song featured lyrics about a serial womanizer and juxtaposed the original horn arrangements with more modern production values. Shortly after being released, "Mambo No. 5" (also known as "Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of...)") became one of the summer anthems of 1999, spreading all over Europe like wildfire. It reached Number 1 in over a dozen countries and peaked at Number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Lou Bega his only Top 40 hit in the United States. In the years that followed, the song was the subject of a seven-year legal dispute between the German singer and Pérez Prado's estate, which finally established both artists as co-writers.
