American rock band Little Feat released their fourth studio album Feats Don’t Fail Me Now in 1974. The album continued the band’s exploration of blues-rock and Southern rock, and it expanded their sonic palette by incorporating additional elements of funk and soul. “Spanish Moon,” a song written by vocalist and guitarist Lowell George, showcases the group’s expanded sonic identity. The song’s lyrics describe a fictional bar called Spanish Moon, a seedy nightclub that left much to be desired; however, there is a female singer that makes visiting the bar worthwhile. “Spanish Moon” was the only Little Feat song produced by acclaimed producer Van Dyke Parks, who had developed a reputation for his work with The Beach Boys. Van Dyke Parks was originally intended to be the producer for Feats Don’t Fail Me Now, but he ended up only recording “Spanish Moon” before he was deemed too expensive by the group’s record label. The rest of the album was produced by Lowell George. “Spanish Moon” was released as the lead single to Feats Don’t Fail Me Now, and quickly became one of the band’s most popular songs.
