There are songs that transcend their origins. “Unchained Melody” is one of the most instantly recognizable songs in music, thanks in part to iconic uses of the track in pop culture. But it is a little-known fact that this very popular song, written by Alex North and Hy Zaret, was originally released in an obscure 1955 film called Unchained and was even nominated for an Oscar. It then went on to become a standard, performed most notably by the Righteous Brothers in 1965. Country music star LeAnn Rimes recorded her own version of the song in 1996, first releasing it as a B-side accompanying her single “One Way Ticket (Because I Can).” In December of that same year, LeAnn Rimes’s version was released as a radio single and served as a title track to her compilation album Unchained Melody: The Early Years. “Unchained Melody” by LeAnn Rimes reached Number 3 on both the Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts in the US.
