This iconic travelogue about two wanderers embracing the open road ("From the Kentucky coal mine to the California sun") was written by Kris Kristofferson and first popularised by Janis Joplin, whose defining posthumous version of "Me and Bobby McGee" turned the song into a hit in 1971. “How Do I Live" hit-maker LeAnn Rimes put her stamp on the tune in 1999 and laid down a scorcher for her fourth self-titled album, which comprised a mixed bag of country covers including "Crazy" (immortalised by Patsy Cline) and "Crying Time" by Buck Owens as well as one original song: honky-tonk tune "Big Deal." The album rocketed to the top of the Country Albums chart. "Me and Bobby McGee" has been reworked by everyone from Thelma Houston and The Highwaymen to Willie Nelson and Jennifer Love Hewitt and even the Grateful Dead. In 2002, Janis Joplin's version of "Me and Bobby McGee" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
