Before achieving mainstream success with her 2021 album Sayin' What I'm Thinkin', Lainey Wilson had already put out a few smaller-profile releases, such as the 2016 full-length album Stronger and the 2019 EP Redneck Hollywood. The latter release kicks off with a song titled "Straight Up Sideways," a rollicking country-rock tune that celebrates the joys of cutting loose on the weekend, relaxing, having fun with friends, and blowing steam off after a long week of hard work. The song’s celebratory sound supports its often humorous lyrics, which apply several metaphors to describe the youthful abandon of the weekend, as well as various levels of inebriation. "Straight Up Sideways" was written by Lainey Wilson, Reid Isbell, Jason Nix, and Dan Alley. It was produced by Jay Joyce. The song would also go on to be featured as a track on Lainey Wilson’s breakthrough full-length album, 2021's Sayin' What I'm Thinkin'.
