A grandiloquent 10-minute epic, King Crimson's "The Court of the Crimson King" set out a blueprint for what would be later known as progressive rock. Released as the first single from their 1969 studio debut In the Court of the Crimson King, the track served as both an introduction to the band's uncompromising vision and a declaration of principles. Upon its release, the song reached Number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Written by multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald and lyricist Peter Sinfield, "The Court of the Crimson King" is a poignant commentary on the brutal reality of war, a subject they would also tackle on their follow-up single "21st Century Schizoid Man." In terms of structure, "The Court of the Crimson King" utilizes a riff from Samuel Barber's "Essay for Orchestra" as a leitmotiv and is split into four different verses, divided by an instrumental section titled "The Return of the Fire Witch." A brief reprise of the main theme called "The Dance of the Puppets" can be heard right before the song's abrupt end.
