Written by multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald and lyricist Peter Sinfield, "The Court of the Crimson King" is a poignant commentary on the brutal reality of war, a subject they would also tackle on their follow-up single "21st Century Schizoid Man." In terms of structure, "The Court of the Crimson King" utilizes a riff from Samuel Barber's "Essay for Orchestra" as a leitmotiv and is split into four different verses, divided by an instrumental section titled "The Return of the Fire Witch." A brief reprise of the main theme called "The Dance of the Puppets" can be heard right before the song's abrupt end.
