After the commercial failure of his 1967 self-titled studio debut, the up-and-coming English singer-songwriter David Bowie was knee-deep in a creative slump. In the hopes of introducing his work to a wider audience, his then-manager Kenneth Pitt asked him to come up with a new song for the promotional film Love You till Tuesday, one that would demonstrate his inventive songwriting skills to the world. Inspired by the increasing feeling of alienation surrounding his career and Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi film 2001: A Space Odyssey, Bowie wrote the psychedelic folk ballad "Space Oddity," a story about the fictional astronaut Major Tom, who gets lost in space after losing contact with ground control. The single was released in July 1969, a few days before the Moon landing, and was used as background music during the BBC's coverage of the event. "Space Oddity" reached Number 5 in the UK charts and was re-released as a single in the US in 1973 after the commercial breakthrough of the Ziggy Stardust album, reaching Number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the following years, Bowie reprised the character in the singles "Ashes to Ashes" (1980), "Hallo Spaceboy" (Pet Shop Boys remix) (1995), and "Blackstar" (2015).
