"God bless America / Land that I love / Stand beside her and guide her / Thru the night with a light from above," sings Kate Smith, her voice swollen with passion for her homeland. Originally written by Jewish composer Irving Berlin during WW1 in 1918, patriotic anthem "God Bless America" was brought back to life in 1938 during the height of Adolf Hitler and later rewritten as a peace song to commemorate Armistice Day. "God Bless America" took on new meaning when Virginia-born soprano Kate Smith, endearingly nicknamed 'The Songbird of the South,' gave voice to the song and brought it into the national consciousness. Although Kate Smith's career was later marred by controversy – after it was discovered that the singer had performed songs with racist lyrics in the 1930s – Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" remains an enduring American favorite.

This does not have the depth a richness it should... and is much too stylized for most singers.
