Embodying the grand tradition of '70s rock bands named after US cities and states, Kansas – who hailed, unsurprisingly, from Topeka in Kansas – formed in 1970 and thrived during the decade's album-oriented rock era. The troupe released their proggy debut self-titled album in 1974, which thematically dipped its toes in Eastern religions, and another two well-received, Gold-certified LPs until delivering their highest-selling album in the form of 1976's Leftoverture. Written by Kansas guitarist Kerry Livgren – who also penned the band's first Top 40 single, "Carry On Wayward Son""What's On My Mind" sits as the third track on the album; a wistful reflection of a failed relationship with a standout vocal segment from Steve Walsh. After being 'left standing out in the cold', the protagonist is able to use the gift of hindsight to conclude that "You made me love you, now I'm home once again; No, I never want to leave you no more."
