"Portrait (He Knew)" is a song by American prog-rockers Kansas. Released as the third single from their fifth studio album Point of No Return in May 1978, "Portrait (He Knew)" was written by lead singer Steve Walsh and keyboardist Kerry Livgren, who was going through a moment of spiritual awakening at the time. The main inspiration behind the song was the life of Albert Einstein and its lyrics paid tribute to the German-born physicist's unparalleled genius. Even though the song wasn't a big hit in the United States, it did manage to reach Number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100. After his conversion to Christianity, Kerry Livgren re-recorded a religious version of the song with his band AD titled "Portrait II." Over the next following decades, "Portrait (He Knew)" appeared in several live albums and compilations by the band, including Two for the Show, Live at the Whisky, Device, Voice, Drum, The Kansas Boxed Set, The Ultimate Kansas, Sail On: The 30th Anniversary Collection, Works in Progress, and Playlist: The Very Best of Kansas.
