By the time the early 1980s came around, there were many reasons to think Canadian folk veteran Leonard Cohen was on his way out. Against all odds, the singer-songwriter made a comeback with 1984's Various Positions, an album that featured extensive contributions by frequent collaborator Jennifer Warnes and marked a significant shift in his sound, adopting a largely synth-based approach. Even though "Hallelujah," perhaps the most well-known song from the album, found little initial success as a single, it went on to achieve universal acclaim after being covered by John Cale in 1991 and Jeff Buckley in 1995. A heartwrenching reflection on faith and personal relationships, "Hallelujah" has been covered over 300 times by several artists from all genres, including singer-songwriter k.d. lang, who included it in her 2004 album Hymns of the 49th Parallel. In the years that followed, the song became a staple of k.d. lang's live repertoire, with performances at the 2005 Juno Awards and the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games as the most notable examples.
