UK R&B star Junior stepped out with his boogie-flavoured debut single "Mama Used to Say" in April 1982 and immediately asserted his grip on the post-disco scene. The track cracked the UK Singles Chart top 10 in June 1982, where it stuck around at number seven for two weeks, and also reached a transatlantic audience, making it into the top 40 pop and top five R&B charts in the US. Junior picked up the Best Newcomer award from Billboard magazine for his efforts. "Mama Used to Say" was featured on his debut album Ji but has lived on in the musical endeavours of everyone from Bone Thugs N Harmony, who sampled the song for their single "Thuggish Ruggish Bone" from their 1994 debut EP Creepin on ah Come Up, and Warren G, who sampled the song for his "Do You See" single from his "Regulate... G Funk Era" album (1994), to Beverley Knight, who released "Mama Used to Say" in 2011 as the first single release from her seventh studio album, Soul UK, a tribute to UK soul artists.
