Deploying evocative metaphors and imagery ("Day of independence / Stamped us like a brand / Round the necks of millions to the land / As the mighty eagle / I need room to breathe / Witness from the treadmill, I take my leave"), "Grinder" rages against the oppression of humanity by ruthless governments and corporations who grind people down like meat. Written by Rob Halford along with Judas Priest's guitarists, K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton, and recorded at the Tittenhurst Park estate formerly owned by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, the track is one of the highlights of the band's hook-laden sixth studio album, British Steel, enshrined in arresting lyrics and Glenn Tipton's knockout guitar solo. Rising to number four on the UK chart, British Steel became a defining document of the new wave of British heavy metal that went on to rule the '80s, demonstrating the grand commercial potential of the genre.
