Johnnie Taylor cut his teeth in gospel groups in the '50s, taking in a stint with Sam Cooke's Highway Q.C.'s before beginning his career-defining relationship with Stax Records in 1966, where he was would become known as "The Philosopher of Soul". By October 1973, with seven years of notable Stax recordings and 20 R&B chart singles under his belt, he charted on the Billboard Hot 100 again with Cheaper To Keep Her,"; a simmering soul communiqué written by "Mustang Sally" hit-maker Sir Mack Rice. The single made it to number two on the R&B chart while also demonstrating crossover appeal by reaching number 77 on the Hot 100. Eight years later, "Cheaper to Keep Her" inspired the Ken Annakin-directed comedy movie of the same name, which followed William "Bill" Dekker (Mac Davis) as a newly divorced swinger who gains employment with a feminist attorney named K. D. Locke (Tovah Feldshuh).
