"Harry Hippie" is one of Bobby Womack's best-loved songs. The plaintive track was penned by songwriter Jim Ford as a tribute to the soul singer's brother Harry Womack, who had been involved in the family group The Valentinos – also known as The Womack Brothers – primarily as a bassist and backing vocalist, since childhood. The 1972 deep soul elegy at first took on life as a chronicle of Harry Womack’s unconventional lifestyle in LA ("He's like a bottle in water / Harry just floats through life / Walks around all day long singin' this song / Whoa, whoa, whoa, oh yeah) but later took on a heartbreaking new meaning after Harry Womack was killed by his girlfriend during a fight in 1974. Released as a single in 1973, "Harry Hippie" reached Number eight on the R&B chart and became the 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee's second Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at 31.
