John Mellencamp dropped "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." in January 1986 as the third single from his 1985 album Scarecrow, writing and producing it under his real name along with co‑producer Don Gehman. Subtitled as “A Salute to ’60s Rock,” it was recorded in April 1985 at his own Belmont Mall studio in Indiana. It became a massive hit in the US, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 6 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, while also cracking the Top 10 in Canada and reaching number 18 in Australia. In the UK it hit number 67 across six weeks on the chart. John Mellencamp originally hesitated to include the song on the otherwise serious Scarecrow theme, adding it at the last minute as a bonus party track—a decision that paid off with heavy MTV exposure and wide radio play. Musically, "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." pays homage to 1960s styles, weaving in references to classic riffs over tight, heartland rock instrumentation and John Mellencamp’s lyrics about celebrating the joy of rock music while invoking national pride in a way that feels more fun than patriotic sermon.
