John Hiatt has worn several hats during his prolific career, trying his hand at everything from new wave to country and blues-rock but always with one thing in common: soul. Born in Indianapolis and raised in Nashville, he spent the 1970s experimenting with sounds and in 1980 completed a stint as a member of Ry Cooder's backing band. "Slow Turning" was his first notable radio hit, propelled by lightning-quick banjo and an appearance in the 2002 sports drama film The Rookie, which starred Dennis Quaid. "Slow Turning" is a sweetly existential track on which John Hiatt pays tribute to heroes Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, and Bob Dylan, with references hidden in the lyrics: "A slow learnin' / But you learn to sway / A slow turnin', baby / Not fade away, not fade away, not fade away." The song formed the title track of John Hiatt's ninth album, which was released in 1988, and provided rich cover fodder; "Icy Blue Heart" was covered by Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt and "Feels Like Rain" by Buddy Guy.
