Perhaps one of the most iconic songs in Joe Jackson's catalog, "I'm the Man" was released in 1979 as the first single from his second album of the same name. An infectious piece of fast-paced new wave pop, the song is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the disposable nature of pop music in the late 1970s, sung from the point of view of a sketchy conman who sees music not as a form of expression, but as a way to gain increase profits. This idea was very much in line with the album's "spiv rock" theme, which heavily criticized the music industry and its many attempts to commercialize and exploit the latest fads. Even though "I'm the Man" failed to enter the charts in the United States and the UK upon its release in 1979, it did peak at Number 23 in Canada and would later appear in the compilations Stepping Out: The Very Best of Joe Jackson (1990) and This Is It! (The A&M Years 1979–1989) (1997). Its parent album, in turn, reached Number 22 on the Billboard 200 and Number 12 on the UK Albums Chart.
