Joan Jett made her name with her first band The Runaways in the mid-1970s, who exploded onto the rock scene with the iconic "Cherry Bomb," and went on to score hits aplenty in the 1980s with the Blackhearts, most notably with "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," which held the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks in 1982. Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania-born firebrand had begun laying the foundations for a solo career, releasing her self-titled debut in 1980, which was later re-released as Bad Reputation in 1981. The follow-up LP, which wouldn't arrive for another decade, came in the form of a covers collection, The Hit List. "Love Hurts" is the second track on said follow-up and a seamless lesson in classic rock, which heralded the start of the 1990s although kept one foot sonically in the 1980s. Penned by American songwriter Boudleaux Bryant, "Love Hurts" had its roots in the crooning 1960s pop of The Everly Brothers, but was recast by Scottish hard rockers Nazareth who no doubt paved the way for Joan Jett's go-getting version.
