In "Alone," Heart lead singer and chief belter Ann Wilson is positively frantic with emotion. "I hear the ticking of the clock / I'm lying here, the room's pitch dark / I wonder where you are tonight / No answer on the telephone," she sings, conjuring the image of a rom-com character clutching a picture of her love interest in a movie scene. The rock-driven power ballad was written by songwriting duo Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly (who also scored smash-hits with "So Emotional," "Like A Virgin" and "Eternal Flame") who originally recorded it under the name i-Ten on their 1983 album Taking a Cold Look but failed to make any waves. However, it was taken to the top of the charts in the US and Canada by Heart who covered the song for their 1987 album Bad Animals. It became Heart's most successful single in the UK, where it climbed to number three on the UK Singles Chart in June 1987, becoming the band's only tune to crack the UK top 5.
