Jim Croce sent out a message of love in this idyllic country-folk ballad from 1974. "Well, I know it's kinda late / I hope I didn't wake you / But what I got to say can't wait / I know you'd understand," begins the US singer-songwriter on this posthumous song released after he tragically died in a plane crash, along with five others, in Louisiana. He was just 30. "'Cause every time I tried to tell you / The words just came out wrong / So I'll have to say I love you in a song," continues the heartfelt chorus of "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" – written as a love letter to his wife Ingrid Croce following a fight and hitting Number 9 on the US singles chart – which was featured on the fifth and final album (released posthumously) from Jim Croce, I Got a Name, with the album's title track used as the theme for 1973 sports dram film The Last American Hero, which starred Jeff Bridges as American NASCAR driver Junior Johnson.
