Canadian singer and songwriter Jessie Reyes made a splash in the contemporary soul scene with "Figures," a song from her debut extended play Kiddo (2017). First released as a single, later included in her EP Kiddo, and eventually making its way to her debut full-length album Before Love Came to Kill Us (2020), the song incorporates elements of 1950s soul music with a contemporary indie pop aesthetic. “Figures” features lyrics with a wry perspective on the nature of relationships after a painful breakup. The song was written by Jessie Reyez along with Shy Carter, as well as Björn Djupström and Tobias Frelin (members of songwriting duo Priest and the Beast). Björn Djupström and Tobias Frelin also served as producers. “Figures” peaked at Number 58 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart, and eventually went on to receive a triple-platinum certification from Music Canada for the sale of 240,000 track-equivalent units. In the US, “Figures” peaked at Number 7 on Billboard’s R&B Digital Song Sales chart.
