The first band to sign to Chad Kroeger's 604 Records, Canadian post-grunge outfit Theory of a Deadman released their debut self-titled album in 2002 and another four full-lengths during the '00s and '10s before dropping their pop-inclined sixth album on which "Rx (Medicate)" is contained. Tyler Connolly's decision to compose the majority of the album using piano, rather than the usual guitar, shaped its poppier sound. "Rx (Medicate)" is the second track on the album and conveys the track's drugged-out content – in which Tyler Connolly muses about the dead-eyed state of the world and the prescription drug epidemic – with emotionless, apathetic-sounding vocals and a sort of sickly upbeat pop. "Rx (Medicate)" is one of the band's nine singles to have made it into the top ten of the US Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, and one of four songs that have peaked at number one, also including "Bad Girlfriend," "Lowlife," and "History of Violence."
