In 2013, country music artist Jason Isbell released his fourth studio full-length Southeastern, which represented a huge leap forward in terms of songwriting and commercial acclaim. Recorded between a stint in rehab and his wedding with singer-songwriter Amanda Shires, the album received almost universal praise and debuted at Number 23 on the Billboard 200, becoming his highest-charting effort up to that date. "Cover Me Up," the first track on the album, is a slow-burning ballad about two lovers meeting for the first time after being apart for too long. Heavily inspired by his relationship with Shires, the song is a solemn love letter to the person who helped him sober up and get back on track. In 2014, "Cover Me Up" won the Song of the Year Award at the Americana Music Awards. It was also covered by fellow country singer Morgan Wallen, who included it in his 2021 album Dangerous: The Double Album.
