Things were not looking great for American country singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson back in 2005—he was dropped by his label BNA following the commercial failure of his studio debut The Dollar and was simultaneously going through a divorce with his wife. During that time, the Alabama native recluded himself from society and began penning songs for other artists, most notably George Strait's 2006 chart-topping country hit single "Give It Away." Two years later, he finally managed to turn things around with The Lonesome Song, his major-label debut for Mercury Nashville Records. The album earned Jamey Johnson the first Top 10 entry of his career with the Grammy-nominated song "In Color" and reached Number 6 on the US Top Country Albums chart. Written by Jamey Johnson, Kendell Marvel, and Wayd Battle, the outlaw country-tinged title track wasn't officially released as a promotional single but was quickly pointed out as one of the highlights of the album, with its lyrics perfectly capturing the narrator's feeling of aimlessness and regret.
