Hirsute country star Jamey Johnson first made his presence known in 2005 with "The Dollar," which made it to Number 14 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart the following year. He went on to bag two gold-certified albums for Mercury Nashville: The Lonesome Song (2008) and The Guitar Song (2010). "Between Jennings and Jones" is featured on the latter album and depicts Jamey Johnson's early experiences of trying to make it in Nashville ("I left Montgomery on North 65 / I was restless and ready to give Nashville a try / I rolled into town with a sound of my own / Somewhere between Jennings and Jones"). His career trajectory later went off-piste as he transformed himself into the hard-living, outlaw country king pin reflected in the song's chorus: "Hangin' out in the bars with the drunks and the stars / I found a few good ol' boys just like me / Started burnin' our candles both ends and the middle / A bunch of roarin' outlaws at high speed”.
