"Doing it to Death," which also goes by the fitting alias of "Gonna Have a Funky Good Time," was borne from a jam session and anchored by James Brown's ferocious lead vocal. The song was released as a single in 1973 and became an R&B chart-topper and credited to Fred Wesley & The J.B.'sJames Brown's backing band—and was the first of their recordings to showcase the skills of saxophonist Maceo Parker. "Doing it to Death" was included on James Brown's peerless double album Sex Machine, which was released in 1970 to a rapturous response. The album featured an all-star cast of funksters, including Bootsy Collins, Clyde Stubblefield, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Bobby Byrd, and others. Sex Machine was billed as a live recording, with the second part of the album featuring tracks captured at a concert in "the Godfather of soul's" hometown of Augusta, Georgia. Sex Machine sits at the top table of the greatest funk records ever made.
