A sizzling, desert-hot funk tune from the master, "The Payback" finds James Brown in typically groovy form as he serves up a cold hard dish of wah-wah guitar and revenge, promising to track down the man who stole his money and his girlfriend. "Now brother get ready, that's a fact / Get ready you mother for the big payback," he threatens on the title track to his 1973 album, which was originally written and recorded as the soundtrack for the 1974 film Hell Up in Harlem – the sequel to blacksploitation crime drama Black Caesar (1973). The music never made it onto the movie – Edwin Starr was given the gig instead – but James Brown decided to release the album nonetheless and hit number one on the Soul Albums chart for two weeks, as well as charting in the Pop Albums Top 40. It was also James Brown's only studio album to be certified gold. "The Payback" itself was one of the last R&B chart-toppers of his career.
